Why CTL Alone Does Not Determine Performance

Threshold Accuracy: Correctly setting your functional threshold power (FTP) or threshold HR (or pace) ensures TSS and CTL reflect true effort.
Recovery and Nutrition: Adequate rest and fueling support adaptation and prevent burnout
Consistency: Regular training over months builds a solid fitness base
Because of these variables, CTL should be viewed alongside other metrics like:
TSB (Training Stress Balance or Form): Ideally +5 to +20 on race day. Longer events often benefit from the higher end of this range
ATL (Acute Training Load or Fatigue): Reflects short-term fatigue (ideally this number should be higher than your CTL or Fitness number otherwise you are detraining, or in most cases tapering
Ramp Rate: A safe weekly CTL increase is about 4–8 points to reduce injury risk
How to Use CTL Targets in Your Training
Set Realistic Goals
Use the CTL ranges as a guideline rather than a strict rule. For example, if you plan to race a 70.3 and are currently at 60 CTL, aim to gradually increase to the 90–110 range over several months.
